Estimate what a bathroom remodel really runs by size and finish level, so your budget is grounded before the quotes arrive.
Bathrooms cost more per square foot than most rooms because so much plumbing, tile and waterproofing is packed into a small space. We apply a per-square-foot band by finish level.
Moving the toilet, tub or shower drain is the single biggest cost driver. Keep the fixtures where they are to stay near the low end, and always reserve 15–20% for hidden water damage.
By area, roughly $125–$250 per square foot for a cosmetic update, $250–$450 for a mid-range remodel with new tile and fixtures, and $450–$750 or more for a high-end walk-in-shower build. Small rooms still carry high per-foot costs.
A bathroom concentrates plumbing, electrical, waterproofing and tile into a tiny footprint. That density of skilled trades — plus the risk of hidden water damage — pushes the per-square-foot cost above most other rooms.
Moving plumbing. Relocating the toilet, tub or shower drain means opening walls and floors and pulling in a plumber, which adds cost quickly. Keeping fixtures in place is the easiest way to control the budget.
Hold back 15 to 20%. Bathrooms are the most likely room to reveal hidden rot, leaks or failed waterproofing once tile and drywall come off, and those repairs are not optional.
